Years ago, ADHD was viewed as a childhood disorder, something children might outgrow or that served as an excuse for bad behavior and lack discipline. Now we know this picture is incomplete. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the majority of people into adulthood. It deserves to be taken very seriously at all stages of life.

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that are more frequent and severe than typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development. These patterns can interfere with daily functioning.

ADHD can present in three different ways. The Predominantly inattentive Presentation, formerly called ADD, is characterized by difficulty sustaining focus, completing tasks, managing time and organizing without hyperactivity. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation involves excessive physical activity, difficulty staying seated, impulsive decision-making, and interrupting others. Combined Presentation involves significant symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity.

ADHD is not a lack of willpower

It cannot be repeated enough. ADHD is a real difference in brain functioning and development, especially in the prefrontal cortex, which controls executive functions like planning, impulse control and working memory. People with ADHD do not act carelessly or are lazy. They are not lazy or careless. Their brains work differently.

ADHD in Adults

Adult ADHD is often misdiagnosed in women. They may present with symptoms of inattention, which are less disruptive. Adult ADHD is often characterized by chronic disorganization and difficulty managing time, as well as relationship instability, career failure, emotional dysregulation and follow-through problems. It often co-occurs along with anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, and depression.

Effective Treatment

ADHD is a highly researched condition in psychiatry and the treatment for ADHD is very effective. The most effective and studied pharmacological treatment is stimulant medication, such as amphetamine and methylphenidate salts. For those who are unable to tolerate stimulants, non-stimulant medication is also an effective option. Psychoeducation, ADHD coaching, behavioral therapy, and organizational skills training are all ways to help people develop strategies for managing their daily challenges. CBT for adults adapted to ADHD addresses emotional and self-esteem issues that are often associated with the disorder.
